Yep, you read that right. The Academy Award winning writer of Traffic and director of Syriana Stephen Gaghan has lent his pen to the phenomenally successful Call of Duty game franchise, writing the story (and presumably the screenplay) for the next installment in the series, Call of Duty: Ghosts. Apparently Gaghan didn't just drop off a script but worked from an office at developer Infinity Ward throughout the game's production.As a fan of the series and as a massive fan of Syriana which was my favourite film of 2005, this is fantastic news. While playing Black Ops with Sam Worthington's voice was oddly jarring, I think this will be a much more seamless fit while adding more depth to the gameplay experience. Watch the trailer...

Donnie Yen is all thawed out and ready to go in Iceman 3D, the Law Wing Cheong directed remake of the 1989 Clarence Fok directed The Iceman Cometh, with Yen playing the role of a Ming era warrior frozen on a mountaintop only to be thawed out in modern times. Action ensues.Production has been quite difficult on this one with principal photography running well behind schedule and the budget ballooning to double the original amount but the first trailer has arrived and the footage they've got on camera is certainly attractive enough, although fans will note the extensive use of the tight shots and rapid edits that often denote the heavy presence of body doubles. While Henri-Georges Clouzot is best remembered for many of his later films, including The Wages of Fear and Diabolique, the French filmmaker's 1942 debut has gone largely unseen by Western audiences until now. The Murderer Lives at 21 (L'Assassin Habite au 21), based on the novel by Belgian author Stanislas-Andre Steeman, is in fact a sequel to Georges Lacombe's The Last of Six, released a year earlier. That film also starred Pierre Fresnay and Suzy Delair, and was adapted by Clouzot for the screen. In fact, it was his dissatisfaction with the way his script was directed that inspired Clouzot to become a director himself. It was all the way back in November of 2005 that Twitch first wrote about Russian horror film Viy, a remake of one of that nation's earliest horror films which is itself an adaptation of a story by Nikolai Gogol. The years since have not been kind to Viy. Massive delays, multiple reshoots, the apparent failure of more than one company involved in the film - at least in part due to massive budget overruns - the creation of an international framing story involving Jason Flemyng and Charles Dance in an attempt to broaden the international appeal and make their money back, more reshoots, more delays, more companies cycling through, etc etc etc ...But after all of that the film is now, apparently, nearing completion...

A live broadcast of Canal Plus show Le Grand Journal - broadcasting from the Martinez beach during Cannes - was interrupted today when two blanks were fired into the air by a man holding what appeared to be a grenade in his hand. A pair of Cannes jurors - Daniel Auteuil and Christoph Waltz - were being interviewed at the time and were rushed off stage. There were no injuries but between this and yesterday's jewel theft that netted roughly a million dollars worth of jewelry meant to be lent to stars walking the red carpet this year's festival is proving to be rather eventful. In her first directorial turn, actress Katie Aselton impressed indie audiences with her relationship comedy The Freebie. Looking to go in a completely different direction with her sophomore effort, Aselton and husband Mark Duplass worked up the outline for a survival thriller. It's no surprise to long term readers of my reviews that I'm kind of enamoured with David Simon's Baltimore. From Homicide: Life On The Streets, through The Corner and of course The Wire (still perhaps the best programme that has ever aired on television), these fictional works exposed a very real, unique culture of inner city Baltimore in a way that remains a touchstone years after their aired.I grant immediately that David Simon had nothing to do with the making of Lotfy Nathan's tremendous film, 12 O'Clock Boys, yet the spirit that drove Simon's shows runs throughout this work. Earlier this year, Korean director Kim Jee-woon released his English-language debut, the Arnie vehicle The Last Stand. Though the film had decent reviews, it nevertheless tanked at the box office. Kim is now back on home soil and his first project was a short film commissioned for the 40th anniversary of the outdoor clothing manufacturer Kolon. You would think that the cineaste would return to his strong suit, namely hyper-stylized and violent genre films (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw the Devil) but then you'd be surprised to discover that his latest is actually a romcom. Review: KISS OF THE DAMNED Recreates Euro-Horror On A Grand Scale

There are few sub-genres of film quite as specific and instantly recognizable as '70s Euro-horror. Filmmakers like Jean Rollin, Jess Franco, Jose Ramon Larraz and a few others left an indelible mark on the international horror market. Their creations were just as concerned with sensuality as they were with shock value, and as a result, the films positively oozed sex, literally sometimes. It is from this mold that Xan Cassavetes' (Z Channel) debut narrative feature, Kiss of the Damned, was cast. Cassavetes manages to recreate much of the atmosphere and feel of those classic Euro-horrors, often to the point of irritation for a true fan. She mixed her prescription sleeping pills with wine and passed out during the aforementioned pizza-making. Hours later, she woke up to a smoke-filled house. (Somebody up there must be looking out for her.) Without any hesitation, she blames this happening on her doctor. After all, he gave her the medication, which means it's in no way her fault that the sleeping pills made her fall asleep, resulting in a non-edible pizza and near non-existent house. I watched Galaxy Quest again recently and as well as showing that it gets better with age (Sam Rockwell's later role in Moon actually adds further comedy layers to his panicked spaceship crew-member) it also shows that actors running around in spandex delivering bizarre lines of dialogue is preposterous when viewed in any way outside the context of a show.And so it is with the new clip from Star Trek: Into Darkness, which features even sillier uniforms, lots of sweat and panic in some kind of disaster scenario, and with unintentionally funny lines like, "That's going to render him inert." Ah, the joys of live television - despite skipping 42 (and having told the producers as much earlier in the week) was thrown a curveball without preparation to talk about the Jackie Robinson film that's dominated this weekend's box office. Bonus: Got to talk again about the misguided but still charming Red Tails.While I've not yet seen it, I do feel that more often than not a proper documentary does a much better job for me than a fiction film in telling a sports story - sure, there are a few exceptions, but even the likes of Ken Burn's epic PBS doc on baseball holds more interest for me than does this latest film, even if IndyHan Solo is looking particularly over-the-top in this one....
